Lawrence schools foundation makes online giving easy

Heather Wood made a beeline for shelves of math games Wednesday at United Art and Education in Castleton.

Tucked into her purse were two $25 gift cards to stock up for her third-grade classroom at Forest Glen Elementary School.

Donations through Lawrence Township School Foundation's online wish list financed the $50 spree, and Wood intended to make the best of it.

"Anything where the kids don't think they're learning, that's a good thing," she said as she tried to decide which game to buy. "They give us money through the school year, but there's always a need for more."

The wish list -- at www.msdltf.org -- allows donations to specific teachers online with a credit card. Most donations arrive in classrooms in the form of gift cards to United Art and Education or Barnes & Noble, although larger ticket items such as printers can be donated, too.

Each teacher in the district has a link for donations.

Christie Love, executive director of the foundation, said teachers nationwide have to invest more and more of their own money into classrooms each year to keep up with needs.

"You're not going to write a great grant application to get you sticky notes," she said. "This site has been a godsend."

Some parents have started a frenzy of giving as other families made sure their children's classrooms are included.

"It's contagious in some parent groups," said Joanie Emhardt, a member of the foundation board. "For teachers, they don't always get that people want to help them. They're not used to people just offering things up."
