Steps

  • Step 1
Using a student-grade acrylic, pour 3-4 tablespoons of paint into a bowl.
  • Step 2
Wearing gloves, wipe up some of the paint with a handful of fiber fill.
  • Step 3
To help the color saturate evenly, repeatedly pull the fibers apart until the color is thoroughly mixed in. Try to use as little paint as possible to keep the fibers from clumping. Add more paint for more intense color, or more fiber if the fiber is too wet. The fiber should be fluffy.
  • Step 4
Mix more fiber colors as desired. Let the colors dry overnight.
  • Step 5
Pull the fibers apart to create a fiber mat. Glue the first color in place on chipboard (if desired, paint chipboard black and let dry before attaching fibers). White glue works but has a slower drying time; to decrease drying time use a low temperature glue gun.

  • Step 6
Continue adding different colors until the background is complete.

  • Step 7
You can roll fibers into shapes and balls, and twist fibers into strands. Use these pieces to add detail to your picture.
