Steps

  • Step 1
Flatten 1/2 lb. of clay until it is about 1/4" thick.
  • Step 2
Wad up newsprint into an oval-shaped ball about 3" long. Use masking tape to secure paper shape.
  • Step 3
Drape clay over paper ball, making sure to leave bottom open to help with drying.
  • Step 4
Keeping shapes and details simple, pinch clay in the front and shape the head.
  • Step 5
Pinch clay in the back and shape the tail.
  • Step 6
Smooth and finish shaping the clay. Using modeling tools, add a beak and eyes (optional). Plan to complete the entire sculpting process in one session. Clay can be moistened with water, if needed. Allow to dry for 24-48 hours.
  • Step 7
Finish by painting with acrylic paints. This example is a Flat Tailed Dove.
  • Optional
Experiment with different types of birds, such as roosters, parrots and more.
