Steps
Step 1Flatten 1/2 lb. of clay until it is about 1/4" thick.
Step 2Wad up newsprint into an oval-shaped ball about 3" long. Use masking tape to secure paper shape.
Step 3Drape clay over paper ball, making sure to leave bottom open to help with drying.
Step 4Keeping shapes and details simple, pinch clay in the front and shape the head.
Step 5Pinch clay in the back and shape the tail.
Step 6Smooth and finish shaping the clay. Using modeling tools, add a beak and eyes (optional). Plan to complete the entire sculpting process in one session. Clay can be moistened with water, if needed. Allow to dry for 24-48 hours.
Step 7Finish by painting with acrylic paints. This example is a Flat Tailed Dove.
OptionalExperiment with different types of birds, such as roosters, parrots and more.
