Steps
- Step 1Flatten 1/2 lb. of clay until it is about 1/4" thick.
- Step 2Wad up newsprint into an oval-shaped ball about 3" long. Use masking tape to secure paper shape.
- Step 3Drape clay over paper ball, making sure to leave bottom open to help with drying.
- Step 4Keeping shapes and details simple, pinch clay in the front and shape the head.
- Step 5Pinch clay in the back and shape the tail.
- Step 6Smooth and finish shaping the clay. Using modeling tools, add a beak and eyes (optional). Plan to complete the entire sculpting process in one session. Clay can be moistened with water, if needed. Allow to dry for 24-48 hours.
- Step 7Finish by painting with acrylic paints. This example is a Flat Tailed Dove.
