Steps

  • Step 1
Sculpt a face from modeling clay. Watch our YouTube video for a visual demonstration and tips!
  • Step 2
Place your sculpture in a shallow tray. You can add a neck and shoulders, if desired.
  • Step 3
Thin 1/2 cup of white glue by stirring in 2 tablespoons of water. Lay white tissue paper onto the face and brush with the glue mixture; apply 3-4 layers of tissue in this manner. Use a bristle brush to smooth and press the tissue into the cracks. Apply 3-4 layers of tissue to the background (tray) as well.
  • Step 4
Allow the glue to dry, then peel the tissue from the tray. Gently remove the clay from the back of the form; you may need to use a tool to dig out some of the clay. Trim the edges of the form, then glue to a stiff backing, like cardboard. Paint with your favorite acrylics.
  • Step 5
Create other paper mache shapes as desired - we created a frog and a fish!
