Steps
- Step 1Using a craft knife or clay cutter, divide one package of air-dry clay into 10-12 equal portions, depending on size of puppet(s). Each portion will make one finger puppet. Put unused sections in an air-tight container until ready to use.
- Step 2Decide what type of puppet you want to create, and reserve some of the clay from a single portion for adding details later. Use a pencil to poke a hole into the remaining clay, then use fingers to widen the hole and create a small cone-shaped pinch pot for the base of your figure. Alternatively, flatten the clay into a square or rectangle, then wrap around finger and shape into a pinch pot.
- Step 3Once you have created a pot, model the outside to represent your desired figure. Add details with the reserved clay. Use modeling tools to blend and score so the pieces adhere to each other. To add strength to limbs, ears and other protrusions, insert a toothpick and shape clay around it (see rabbit and ghost pinch pots).
- Step 4Wait 24 hours for the figure to completely dry. Paint with acrylic paints to finish.
