Steps
- Step 1Make a heart template: Place a 4" heart doily on a piece of construction paper. Trace around the inside edge of the heart with a marker, so that the marker bleeds through the holes in the doily. Cut out the heart with scissors.
- Step 2Choose a sheet of 9x12" construction paper and fold in half to 6x9", then fold in half again the opposite way to create a card that is 6 x 4-1/2". The folded edges should be at the top and the left-hand side.
- Step 3With a marker, use the heart template to draw a heart on the front of the card. Cut out the heart with scissors, making sure to cut through both layers of paper, without cutting the folded edges.
- Step 4Glue a 4" doily to the inside of the card so that it shows through the cut-out opening.
- Step 5Use a paper cutter to slice 1/4" wide by 12" long strips of construction paper. Our example uses one strip of each color in the Tru-Ray Warm Assortment, making 10 strips total.
- Step 6Arrange the strips in desired order. Starting with the second strip, trim each strip so that it is approximately 1" shorter than the previous strip, as shown.
- Step 7Fold all the strips in half and nest them inside of each other, the longest on the outside and the shortest on the inside. Bend all strips on one side inward, so they meet together in the center fold making a teardrop shape, and glue in place. Repeat with the other side to finish the quilled heart.
- Step 8Glue the quilled heart on top of the doily on the inside of the card. Decorate and embellish the card to finish.
