Make a colorful basket for any season or occasion with just tissue paper and a weaving basket! This project also has an instructional video available!

  • Step 1
Cut 20x30" tissue paper into strips, each strip should measure 30 x 1-3/4". Twist strips tightly and then untwist to create tissue paper raffia.
  • Step 2
Repeat step 1 with different colors of tissue paper. Select 11 strips of tissue raffia and arrange into the pattern you want to create - baskets can be created in any color pattern, for any season or occasion.
  • Step 3
Start in the middle of one side of the basket and weave the first strip on the bottom. Leave a little extra tissue at the beginning.
  • Step 4
When you reach the last rib of each row, you should have extra tissue on both sides (A).
Weave the tissue from the left side over the last rib and tuck behind the tissue on the right side and glue. Place a bit of glue on the tissue from the right side (B).
Fold the tissue from the right side over the tissue from the left side and press to secure the glue. Trim the excess tissue from both sides and tuck in (C).
For a visual demonstration, watch this project on our YouTube Channel, UnitedArtandEd.
  • Step 5
Continue weaving the rest of the strips in the same manner. Try to make them even, about 1/4" wide.
  • Step 6
Cut a base for the basket from construction paper. Trim 1/4" off each corner so the base fits the basket bottom.
  • Step 7
Place the construction paper base in the basket. You can leave the top of the basket plain, or wrap another raffia strip as shown.
