Have students recreate a famous painting using white paint with just one other color, on smaller canvases to create a mosaic of the portrait. This project also has an instructional video available!

Steps

  • Step 1
Choose a famous painting, such as Grant Wood's American Gothic.

  • Step 2
On a computer, enlarge an image of the painting as needed and divide into a grid of squares. Print the image with the grid showing on top. Cut apart the squares and number them in order.

  • Step 3
Give each student one or more mini canvases and one or more numbered tiles from the painting. Have them write the number of the tile on the back of the canvas.

  • Step 4
Using your choice of color plus white, have students paint the mini canvases to mimic the tiles from the painting. It’s okay if the hues are lighter or darker from student to student.

  • Step 5
Reassemble the mini canvas squares. Mount on foam board if desired. Take a picture of the finished piece and give a copy to each student.
