Create your own scream sculpture, inspired by Edvard Munch. This project also has an instructional video available!

Steps

  • Step 1
Use wire cutters to cut a 6" length of 16-gauge, dark annealed wire. To attach the head to the body, bend the piece of wire into a "U" shape. Push the rounded end of the wire into the Styrofoam egg, the opposite end should be pushed into the top of the Styrofoam cone.

  • Step 2
Use wire cutters to cut a 12" length of 16-gauge, dark annealed wire. To create arms and shoulders, in the very middle of the wire bend the piece of wire into an "M" shape, leaving wire at both ends for the arms. Push the rounded center part of the wire into the top of the Styrofoam cone.

  • Step 3
With scissors, cut an 18x17" piece of muslin (you can get four projects from one yard), then cut the piece into strips. Pour some of the fabric stiffener into a bowl (it can be thinned, if desired), dip muslin strips into the stiffener and expressively wrap them around the foam armature until all foam and wire is covered, creating the head, robe and hands. Muslin pieces can be held in place with rubber bands or stick pins. Use the end of a paintbrush, on
the head, to make indents in the foam to create the eyes and mouth. Allow fabric stiffener to dry.
  • Step 4
Remove any rubber bands or stick pins. Paint the sculpture with a base coat of black acrylic. Using Munch’s "Scream" as inspiration, mix desired colors and expressively paint details on the robe, face and hands. Allow paint to dry.
