Steps

  • Step 1
Research the type of bird you would like to create. Print out an image of the bird from the side profile to use as reference. Make a newsprint armature by crumpling sheets of newsprint to form the body. The more crumpled and flexed, the easier it will be to shape. Add masking tape to keep the form together and reinforce the shapes. Crumple newsprint to form the neck and head. Reinforce the shape with masking tape and attach to the bird body.
  • Step 2
Using cardboard, cut out feet shapes and create holes where the legs will go.

  • Step 3
Create the legs by gluing old pencils, sticks, or toothpicks to the cardboard feet. Allow to dry completely.

  • Step 4
Using cardboard, cut out a top and bottom beak shape. Attach with glue or tape. Optional: create and add wings.

  • Step 5
Push the legs into the bird body. Attach with glue or masking tape. Optional: Glue the feet to a sturdy base, such as wood, cardboard or plastic for added stability.

  • Step 6
Use acrylic paint or collage materials to finish the bird.
