Use gesso, tempera paints and pastels to create a mural! This project also has an instructional video available!

Steps

  • Step 1
Tape a 6 ft. length of mixed media paper to the floor or a wall. Apply a coat of clear gesso to the entire piece of mixed media paper.
  • Step 2
Once the gesso is dry, use a water soluble graphite crayon to draw action-style spontaneous shapes on the paper. Add shading if you want.
  • Step 3
Next, use a paint brush to wash water over the graphite crayon to enhance the drawing.
  • Step 4
Use tempera paint to add a layer of color. Keep your strokes loose and spontaneous, and be sure not to cover all of the graphite layer.
  • Step 5
When the tempera is dry, build up the color and add details with chalk pastels. Finally, add richness and depth to the colors with a layer of oil pastels.
  • Step 6
To preserve the mural and prevent smearing, spray the entire mural with spray fixative in a well ventilated area. Remove the tape.
