Create faux fossils with Model Magic and tempera paint!
Steps
- Step 1Knead 1 oz. of white Model Magic for about 3 minutes, or until it is soft and stretchy. Select a Roylco insect rubbing plate. Using a rolling pin, roll out clay until it is large enough for the imprint. Firmly press the insect rubbing plate into the clay, making a stamped impression. This project can also be created using black Model Magic. Tip: If the rubbing plate is sticking to the clay, try dusting it lightly with cornstarch or baby powder.
- Step 2Using a texture rubbing plate, lightly press into the clay, creating a bumpy surface to look like rock or stone. Be careful not to press so hard that the previously stamped insect impression disappears. Allow to dry completely.
- Step 3Using tempera, paint the entire surface dark grey or black. Make sure all the impressions are painted. Allow to dry. If using black Model Magic, skip this step.
- Step 4Using white or light grey tempera, drybrush over the surface of the clay to create highlights. Allow to dry completely.
- Bonus IdeaTry this project using Leaves Rubbing Plates, too!
