Steps
- Step 1Take a portrait-style photograph, ensuring a close-up of the face. Using a photo-editing program, such as Photoshop, convert picture to black and white and print on regular 8-1/2 x 11" paper.
- Step 2Using a ruler, divide the picture into 16 equal squares, 4 wide by 4 tall. Cut out all the pieces.
- Step 3Glue every other piece onto a sheet of white drawing paper. Then, glue the remaining pieces onto a second sheet of white drawing paper. You can either make two projects, or just use the second picture for reference.
- Step 4Using light pencil marks and the second picture for reference, begin filling in the missing squares of the picture.
- Step 5Add additional details and shading, gradually darkening the drawing to match the tone of the picture.
- Step 6Use tortillions and blending stumps to shade areas, and to create shadows and dimension.
- Step 7Finish by building up dark sections.
