Use the techniques shown in this project to make your own cave paintings (also known as "parietal art"). This project also has an instructional video available!

Steps

  • Step 1
Tear the edges of a piece of 12x18" gray construction paper into the shape of a rock.
  • Step 2
Squeeze white and black tempera paint onto a paint palette. Dab the paint on the paper with a sponge so that you have a mixture of black, white and gray colors. Natural wool sponges give a unique, soft texture.
  • Step 3
Crumple the wet paper into a ball.
  • Step 4
Unfold the paper, leaving some creases to look like jagged rock. Allow it to dry.
  • Step 5
Using multicultural paints and photos as references, paint animals or scenes onto the paper.
